I'm sure you have all heard about the earthquake in Italy some days ago. Did you hear the story about a 90 year old lady the firefighters rescued from her house three days later? I found it sweet and would like to share it with you in case you haven't heard it. In any case, I sorrow and pray for the victims and hope those who survived can quickly recover from all their losses.

This 90 year old lady lived by herself in an apartment. No telephone, no tv set, no radio. Every day she would go out to buy some food or fresh bread, take a stroll and talk with a neighbor or two. The earthquake was in the middle of the night and even if it was quite strong it did not awaken her. She is probably a little hard of hearing and clearly has a clean consciouss that lets her sleep soundly. All of her neighbors rushed out of the apartment building in the middle of the night, fearing the building would come down on them. When our granny was ready to go out into the street the next day she was unable to open the door, from the damage the building had suffered. She just thought the door was stuck, figured out she could spend the day at home, and was sure she could try calling for help in the evening, when most neighbors would be back from their work. She stayed at home all day, completely unaware of the catastrophe that had hit her town the night before. In the evening she thought it was late to go out and really didn't need to do so, she was sure she could try her door the next day, and went to bed without crying for help. By day 2, neighbors from the building were contacting each other, finding out if anyone had suffered any damage. They could not find their elderly neighbor and thought that, given her age, she had probably been evacuated to a care home or hospital. Granny was again unable to open ther door, found she still had food at home, and settled down for another calm day. No worries at all. She just thought the next day she would cry for help and some neighboor would be able to open the door for her.
Day 3 her neighbors continued to look for her and finally reported to rescue teams that she was missing. So, firefighters went into the building to see what they could find. When they reached her apartment, a strong kick on the door pulled it down and there was granny ... doing crochet. So, the firefighters ask her ... Are you ok? What have you been doing here all this time? And she quietly answers ... "I did a lot of crochet. I love it if I don't have to go out and can do crochet". She was baffled when they took her out into the street and saw the devastation the quake had caused, without having been aware of anything for three full days.

Isn't this great?? Just sitting quietly at home and sewing, totally unaware that the world around you is shaking?? I thought it was funny.

It's unfortunate the news media didn't have the complete story...God bless her...No one should have to experience that especially at her age. Thanks for sharing.

Cute post. Thanks for sharing it with us. It could be me. I never watch TV or listen to the radio for news. (I do, however, spend some time on this web site so I'm not completely isolated.) :0) My husband can tell you what is going on in the world, but I'm pretty much out of touch. Sad, I know.
