Is Anything in the Refrigerator Fair Game?

This morning DH expected praise (or at least thanks) for not eating a small piece of caramel cheese cake I had left from my birthday dinner at a nice restaurant.  It was a fancy dinner, attended by both DH and me.  I had a substantial leftover container, into which the server had put one tiny slice of cheesecake, since it was my birthday and I had specifically requested that the restaurant not do any "whoop-de-doo" about it during the meal.  The cheesecake languished in the refrigerator for a couple of days until I ate it, not in DH's presence, but with my morning coffee today.  When he finished his breakfast later, he asked what I had eaten and I told him.  Then, perhaps in jest, he asked for thanks for not eating it.  Then ensued a legal argument about who had the right to eat it after it had lived in the fridge for a couple of days.  The discussion became hilarious when it dissolved into community property ownership of the refrigerator, etc.  The question finally was, "do you thank someone for NOT doing something that would have been, not illegal but certainly unethical, in the first place?"

I remember having the exact same argument with my sister over a piece of cherry pie (her favorite) when I was 10 and she was 8!! After she had eaten the pie!

No, I have to agree with the others.  You didn't abandon it just because you chose not to eat it right away!  LOL

Thank You, Barbara!  Part of the argument was that I had effectively "abandoned" it in the refrigerator, by not eating it immediately and it was therefore "fair game!"

Totally agree. Even if you never ate it and it grew green fuzzy mold, it is YOURS!
