No you are definitely not alone! I feel the need to have my backing fabric made from coordinating fabric also- heck I even try to have all the fabric for the front from the same line too!! I'm really trying to get over all that though but it's hard to do. LOL
I am glad that I am not alone..... I just have to get over it for these quilts. I must use what has been donated to the project and learn to be okay with it. :-)
I always try to use a coordinating fabric and binding, it gives you a reversible quilt. When the grandkids are over, I flip the quilts! lol
In a perfect world, all of my quilt backs would coordinate with the front. However, since the cost of fabric has continued to rise, I've had to lower my standards a bit. When you think back, and realize that quilts were made with whatever people had on hand, you can almost convince yourself that by not being so fussy with the backing, you are maintaining the integrity of quilting.
I like my backing to coordinate with my top too. Bindings have to coordinate with both backing and top. I always look in the sale section of my LQSs to see if I can find something I can live with. Hate to pay full price for backing but sometimes that's all that works!
