Welcome, Kitty!  I started out the same way, mostly self taught and learned through trying things and thinking them through.  Now there are so many tutorials online, you can find just about anything you need and the bonus is you can watch or read them over and over.  Sounds like you have a sewing background too and that really helps.  Have fun with your fabric panel project, relax and enjoy the ride!  It will all come together; like learning to ride a bike, you never forget.

Never be afraid to ask questions, there is no dumb question.  We all were newbies once! Welcome!

The joy of quilting that you'll have when you finish your 1st one is "Look at what I did and how beautiful it looks". I've been quilting since 2006 and still feel the same way when a quilt or anything else is completed. You're off to a good start and I agree with the others. Have fun, even when you think it'll never look right. Put it aside for a night or 2 and then it'll come to you how to finish it.

Don't be afraid to do it your way. Rules are for guidance...Post a picture when you finish!

Bet the more you quilt the more you'll love it!  Keep at it, and don't be too critical of yourself.  Quilt for joy, not perfection.

Welcome!  I just read your profile on "your page."  Hope the kit is a fun one with clear instructions.  Sounds like you are off to a good start.    Just be patient with yourself and don't be afraid to ask questions.  This is a fun community in which to learn.
