Quilt With Us

I want to thank everyone so much for their prayers - I read your comments to Mom today and she was surprised. (Don't know why - quilters have big hearts!) Lindsey is improving every day, was allowed to eat today and they got him up and moving a little bit, sitting up in a chair. He really struggles with words, but seems to be able to write them, or at least comes close enough that we can guess them. But his thoughts are so random that it's hard to follow his thoughts. It sort of becomes a big guessing game and when we get close he points and says yes. When he can't get the words out that he wants to say, then he says "that" and when he wants to talk about a person he says "Jim". And then he will look at us and say "It's easy."

So, at some point today I just couldn't help myself and started laughing..."you know that and that, it went like that, and Jim went like that, and you know, that and that, Thursday, you know, that and that Jim...you know, it's easy." That was an example of one of the conversations. I told him that I should record him, "because it's easy." At least he laughed at that, and keeps trying. He was able to say his name today, but mine is way too difficult yet. He seems to be in really good spirits, which is half the battle I think. I'll keep everyone posted on progress. Quilting friends really are the best and I think God that I have this wonderful group of quilters in my corner everyday!

I think that this news is really promising. And with his fighting spirit he will recover. I will pray for him too, of course. How do I send comments to your Mom? Can't recall her "screen name"?

So glad to hear he's doing better and on the road to recovery!

I am sure there is a long road of recovery but it sounds like he is well on the way and his great attitude and sense of humor will certainly be a help. Continued prayers for his progress.

Sounds like you and Lindsey are learning to work with his aphasia. Therapy will help. And after awhile you will discover you are translating what is really being said. Remember when frustration sets in, that it will be both yours and his. There are times that I still do not understand what my BIL is attempting to say (he had aphasia with his stroke) and DH will translate for me. You all continue to be in my prayers.

Laughter is the best medicine - the right attitude will help him so much! Thanks for the update.

Isn't the gift of laughter a wonderful thing? Bless your DB for not getting overly frustrated and to be able to see the humor. Having you and your mom there is such a blessing and help to him, I know. We continue to pray for his recovery.

Glad to hear Lindsey is making progress. It is amazing the comeback they can make with therapy and family love. When Mom had her stroke, we bought an erasable board and markers to communicate. Prayers and humor will get you all thru.

Glad to hear there is some improvement. Hopefully each day will show some improvement.

Suzanne, just watch for depression. I know after my DH had his strokes, he was fighting depression. There is always that fear I guess of having another one that will be more debilitating. Take care and we will keep praying. It sounds like Lindsey is coming along great. Even today there are words that DH cannot remember when he is trying to tell you something and the memory that someone called me is gone totally (ha). I just check the phone when I come home now.

There is so much brain swelling with a stroke, each day should bring more clarity. Humor is great and sounds like he has tons of support!
