Quilt With Us

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it is all about family rather than gifts. When I was a child we weren't allowed to speak about Christmas until after Thanksgiving was over. Every time we did my mother would tell us to "hush". My mother passed away many years ago but I still obey her rule. Well, Thanksgiving is over now! I have already watched 3 Christmas movies and am ready to sing Christmas songs, shop, eat Christmas goodies and enjoy the season!!!

Thanksgiving morning when I turned on the radio the first thing I heard was Christmas music. So right there and then I decided I will not listen to the radio for a while. It's not even December yet! I couldn't believe the amount of store flyers that came with the newspaper - all for Black Friday ads. Well Friday is almost over, and I didn't even venture outside in the icky rainy weather.
In the Philippines, Christmas season officially starts 9 days before when the 'novena masses' are said every night, culminating with the Christmas Eve mass. Of course, that was when I was growing up. I guess the country is just as westernized so Christmas shopping starts rather early.

When my youngest daughter was born on Dec 10th (30 years ago), I decided that we wouldn't be putting up decorations or tree until AFTER her birthday because I didn't want her to feel that her birthday wasn't important. I still shopped and made gifts before the 10th, but did it on the quiet side. I will admit that a couple of years, I ended up pulling a Christmas gift out of my stash and giving it to her birthday - I was trying, just not always 100% successful. Now that she's grown with kids of her own, I put the tree and decorations up anytime I want AFTER Thanksgiving. I'll admit that I don't like the idea of Christmas programs on tv before T-Day and I really think it's wrong for stores to start stocking Christmas items not just before T-Day but also before Halloween. Christmas is important, but there are other holidays that should be given their proper place, too.

DH put up the outdoor lights today -- his idea! And he says I get anxious about Christmas! LOLOL I do like to not do any decorating until after Thanksgiving - it is an important holiday, I agree and needs to have our full attention. Hallmark is running great movies on it's channel right now.... how fun!
