Quilt With Us

Do you have organizational tip? I need all the help and ideas to get my mess in order, but here is what I have been doing.

I have been doing "Grandmothers Choice", Block of the week for the last 18 weeks, (if you have not started come on over to the group, it is like 35 weeks.) Since half of the blocks so far have their own pattern, the pieces can get lost. I have found that a picture of the block with the pieces put into sandwich size bag helps. Especially since I have gotten weeks behind. I also find using a clip board keeps the information and what ever project handy. I hope to put it all into a notebook. So come join the fun.

I also have been working on organizing the sewing room. I have found that rolling my 2" strips or more, tie with yard or selvage string and putting them into a Dollar tree cloth bin has help me find the left over fast to put into next project.

I can organize my tools, machine parts and patterns pretty well.  I use a large (very handy!) peg board for tools, plastic carts of drawers (labeled) for Machine parts, and a large filing cabinet for patterns.  What I need help with is the fabric!!!  I have clothing fabric (sew for my DGD), quilting fabric -and they often overlap, as in novelty cottons, "fancies", satin and velvets etc, PJ fabrics, corduroy, and knits.  Overwhelming!!!

Sounds like you're already pretty organized.  I worked on my stash last fall.  Cut 10" and 5" squares, 2.5" strips which I keep in plastic filing cabinet.  Any material  I had 1/2 yard or more I left whole. Keep my rulers lined up in a rack for pot lids, little ones and their directions also have a plastic box to live in.

I keep each project in plastic tote boxes. Sandwich bags do work great for little pieces.

It's so much easier when everything is just kept separate, you can see what you have so when you want to sew you can just sit and sew.  I've wasted a lot of time and energy just searching for things. Guess it was a quilter who said "a place for everything and everything in it's place".

I keep my fabric in an old dresser. One or 2 colours per drawer. Projects go in clear shoeboxes I got for cheap at Costco then into a bookcase my dad made for me 55 years ago. Your Grandmother's Choice baggie/picture idea is great. You could file them in a shoebox one behind the other like mini file folders.

Notions etc are inside 4 deep drawers in a desk I rescued from the curb and painted. This is also my sewing table and the dresser is my cutting table. It all works pretty well. :o)

Sounds like you are doing great!  I spent time last year with my 'scraps', cutting them into 6" squares or 2 1/2" strips.  My smaller scraps that are usable for art quilts I have in ziploc bags by color and keep them in a big tub. It is easy to dig through and pull out the bag with the color family I want and find pieces to work with. I am trying to get my things into either clear drawers or clear tubs on shelves so that everything can be easily found and accessed.  The less I have to move and shift to get to things the more enjoyable it is to use/create.
