Quilt With Us

The worst kind, not even about quilting!

I know some members on QWU also enjoy doing hand embroidery and cross stitching.  Recently I purchased a cross stitch pattern that only lists Valdani color numbers.  The pattern is Quakers & Quilts, a design by Karen Kluba.  After a couple days now of searching online for a conversion chart for Valdani to DMC, I'm broke busted and disgusted.  So, when you run into a pattern chart that only calls for Valdani, do you take out an equity loan on the house for their floss, chuck the chart in the trash, give it to a suspected frienemy for Christmas,  or come up with your own color combination?   Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use the DMC I have on hand. I also get out the color pencils and color the black and white chart to help me know where the colors go. I find kits without thread at yard sales. Have one now I lost the pattern, at least it is stamped, so color will be my choice if I ever get in the mood to finish the project.

Pick colours that are similar and your project should be just fine.

I always just pick similar colors and it seems to work out just fine!

Or don't be afraid to switch it up. Idonot do pink. At all. No pink. So I just replaced pink flowers with red and orange ones. . They are in a blue and white teapot and it looks great!

According to Valdani's site, they have a conversion chart from DMC to Valdani coming soon.  If you don't need to start this project right away, you might want to check back there every so often.  Then just choose the colors in reverse.  As a side note, Valdani thread is expensive, but it is also very high quality.  Basically the same as the difference between chain store quality fabric & quilt shop quality.  However, DMC is also a good brand so you won't go wrong substituting it.

Ha! Ha! Ha!  Just love you guys!  JB, you know your stuff, you nailed that price!  I will eat more chocolate, and mull over the possibilities.

There was a LQS near me a couple of years ago that carried Valdani threads.  That was the first time I had heard of them.  They were very proud of the fact that they were the only shop north of Sacramento that had them.  Delusions of grandeur aside, it was this "business decision" (very expensive everything -- the best of everything) that drove them out of business a few years ago -- Well, I'm sure the recession didn't help any.

I vote with the others; don't worry about the snooty thread manufacturer; pick similar DMC colors that look well together and go for it!

I have heard of Valdani and probably have some for a project in my stash.  Yes, it is quite spendy... $46 for your project, YIKES!.  I agree with everyone else that I would just compare the Valdani colors to DMC and pick the one that looks closest.  It might take a bit of time, but it will worth the$$ saved. It is a nice project - I really like Quaker patterns. I hope you don't chuck it in the trash!

I would just try and match the colors as closely as possible. I haven't used Valdani, but I know it is pricey. I love the quality of DMC and I bet it would work out with just matching them as much as you can. Good luck!

I just looked the brand up....they are expensive but gorgeous colors. I had never heard of them before. I would try to match up the colors like others suggested.
