question about a name - off topic of quilting

Since I have nothing else going on (LOL), I decided to get on to Ancestry.com and start to research my family history.  My sister had started doing this, but she is dyslexic which caused her a lot of frustration due to the hard to read handwriting and misspelled names.  Anyway, I'm hoping someone can answer a question for me.  Is the name Klaas the equivalent of the name Charles?  My great grandfather on my dad's side was named Charles in most of the info I have found, but I also found a census where there was a child named Klaas that I think might have been him as so much of the other info matched.  Any help would be appreciated.

My maiden name is fairly common in West Michigan so it is possible that this person is someone other than my great grandfather.

Thanks for the help everyone.  One of my dad's cousins is still alive so i'm going to see if I can contact her as apparently she was also doing some genealogy.

Researching one's ancestry is a big job! I have known people who get somewhat obsessed about it and even spend a fortune. It can be fun though.  Perhaps you can try also church records, that's what my in-laws did, they traveled all over Quebec to trace their ancestry when they retired, kept them busier than ever.

Janet, that family history stuff is addictive!  Nearly as addictive as quilting.  :D  Interesting stuff.

Janet,,, keep searching some census records,,, see if from one census to another the name was changed to Charles.  Sometimes, people will just go by another name, maybe a middle name or they just don't like the name.

Yes, Charles would be "Karl".
