Quilt With Us

I want to make some handbags/totes, and I'm also about to finish off a quilted flag to hang in our foyer. It is a 2-sided flag (one side Halloween fabric, the other is a fall/harvest leaf fabric). So, I can't just put on a hanging sleeve. I would like to have some fabric strips - about 4 or 5 of them - coming out from the top as loops. So, I guess they would just be like really short pieces of tote bag straps. Anyhow, my question is about interfacing! I have never used it, have no idea what it looks like, and therefore not sure where to look for it! JoAnn's isn't all that close to me, but I do have a Michael's and a Hobby Lobby that are closer. Walmart is always close, but they've stopped selling fabric. They have things like Heat-N-Bond, but I don't think they have interfacing. I don't know if it is sold on a roll or folded up in a package or anything about it! Are there different kinds? Obviously, I need some help! Thanks in advance!

I will definitely check out the Totally Totes group! For the flag, I might look at the Heat N Bond simply because I already have some. Then I can check out Hobby Lobby or Joanns - Hobby Lobby is convenient because I drive near there on a regular basis, but I have to be heading down to Atlanta in order to get to Joanns!

You can get your interfacing by the yard. For totes, I use fusible Pellon fleece. Pellon comes in many weights from very light to the fleece weight. You can also get the sew-in kind, but I wouldn't recommend that for totes. There are also a lot of woven interfacings, both fusible and sew-in. This isn't very informative, I know. Interfacing is a stabilizer that will give your projects extra strength. I don't know if Michael's would be a likely place, but if your Hobby Lobby is like ours, it will have what you want. The clerks will be able to help you. And yes, JoAnn's has it all if you go there.
Hope this helps a little.

You might want to check out the Totally Totes group. There have been several discussions about what to use. It really comes down to personal choice and the effect you want (soft or stiff). The info on the group site is really good.

If your really in a jam and have some extra fleece hanging around, you can use that. That is what I used in my tote inside the fabric and lining (it is pictured on my page). It really worked great! Of course, certain interfacings are better for certain projects, so do your research!

I have made many purses and just use strips of batting inside the straps. It gives it more substance than just interfacing. You would want to use a thinner cotton batting not fluffy.

Hobby Lobby usually sells fabric & in my experience their fabric dept. staff is fairly well informed. Talk to the person there about your needs and you will probably end up buying two different weights of interfacing as ea. project sounds like it has its own requirements. Non woven interfacing is easy to work with, Pelon is a good brand name. Hope this helps.

The heat and Bond will work. You can buy interfacing in all weights: light to heavy. The heavy will be super stiff and the light for some body. What weight may also depend on how heavy your flag. I have my flag hanging with light strips of salvage edge fabric pinned to the back. It works. I alway plan some day to make tabs and use buttons to attach it to the quilt.
