Quilt With Us

Is anyone the program director for their guild? I take over for our guild in September and am looking for ideas. Currently we don't have much money to spend on guest speakers and was wondering how other guilds dealt with this issue. Do you pay members of your own guild if they do a presentation? Has anyone found a good website for ideas? Thanks in advance for ideas. :-)

I am doing the programs for my guild. We are lucky that we have an health expert come and talk to us yearly. I gave her some hot pads I'd made for a thank you the last time she came - however she brought fantastic gifts for us from the hospital where she works. A couple of guild members have talked about various techniques - they don't get paid or gifted justthanked. I've done most of the programs myself, the next one will be on thread, I've also done needles, a group discussion on favorite tips/quilting tools, but the one they loved the most was quilters bingo. I made up my own bingo cards using quilting terms and for each game they had to give me a 2 1/2" WOF strip. (I used beans as markers - they were cheap. I had also put some M & M's in the bags so they could munch on something.) The winner got all the strips. Some of the strips have found their way into charity guilts. We will probably do bingo again in the fall and I'll request all the strips be Christmas fabric. I'm also on the lookout for new blocks, and small objects we could sell at our annual sale in July. Our club likes to keep program at about 20 minutes, so it's not a really big deal.

We've had members put on programs in the past, and recently we started giving them a small 'thank you' gift, like a gift certificate to one of the area quilt shops. We usually just have one or two 'bigger names' once a year, the rest is all guild members, friends of guild members that do something special, and teachers from shops within a 50 mile radius that teach very popular classes. We've had local machine dealers come in and talk about machine care and maintenance, a woman who has a sheep farm and makes wool batting, quilt shop owners from the area talk about the latest tools and how to use them, and sometimes we'll have members set up mini demo areas for an hour and members can go between tables and learn from the different demos. Hope we were all able to help you out!

Hey Suzanne, check out "Carol Lee Poulis" she is one of my new friends and on "Hearts and Faces Connect". Read her profile, she is in 3 quilt guilds and may be able to give you some good advice. She is a sweet lady and I am sure she wouldn't mind helping you!! You can tell her I sent you to her. Blessings, Linda
