Quilt With Us

Got my Quilts for Kids quilt kit done and another from my stash. First time I'd ever brought the backing fabric to the front for the binding but since that was what they requested, I gave it a try. Not too bad for a first attempt. Now I just have to wash them and pack them up!

Thank you for your comments on my QFK quilts- I did one the end of the year and brought the backing around to the front for the binding and found it worked rather well. These 2- I made my own binding. The black race cars was from their kit and I sewed the binding by machine and found it rather hard as I kept missing the binding on the back and had to touch up several places. The green one was from fabric that I bought and I have to confess I hand sewed it. I hand sew very tightly so i am rather confident it will hold up. By the way I grew up in Dresden OH before moving to FL. Robin

I always finish a quilt that way. Actually don't know how to do it any other way. Learned it from Martha Stewart magazine quilt instructions.I'm happy to know that other people do it like that too!

Really cute. I took tomorrow off work to make my quilt. Want to finish it before vacation.I have never done a binding like this so I will try it. Wish me luck. Have a good day.

Cute! I wish I had mine done. I bought fabric Saturday for a 2nd one, and have a pretty good start on the first. Just not enough hours in the day! Maybe this week-end! Are you going to order another kit?

Nanny Gayle, I used directions from a quilter's guide book I have. I cut the batting even with the top and the backing 1" bigger on all sides. I folded the edge of the 1" (wrong sides together) until the cut edge met the quilt and pressed it. Then I folded the folded and pressed backing over the edge of the quilt, mitering the corners and then sewed it in place by machine using a zigzag stitch as suggested in my kit direction sheet. First time I'd ever done anything other than the usual binding strip. I thought the edges didn't lay as straight as when I use a separate binding strip but after they were washed they actually look pretty good!

I have always brought the backing around to the front for the binding. When I started quilting, I didn't know hardly anything and someone said that would be easier. So, I have never done a regular binding.

Carol, did you stitch the binding from the front with the machine? I have only ever stitched the second side by hand.......
