Quilt With Us

I made this project for the Gifty Galore Quilt Along Group.  It's from the book Fun Home Accessories and is perfect for using scraps! I loved the look of these baskets from the very first time I saw them.  They add a fun combination of texture and color.  The fact that they are useful is a nice bonus! The small one is designed for a pint canning jar to fit inside, holding it rigid.  I keep it right beside my sewing machine so that my stiletto, pencil, and scissors are within easy reach.

The instructions are for four different sizes of lined baskets:  8” x 7”, 7” x 6 ½”, 6” x 6”, and 3 ½” x 6” (finished sizes).  I chose to make the smallest and largest.  Osnaburg is not something I work with a lot, but I love its rough, primitive texture and  neutral color—it really sets off the pop of color from our summer batiks.

These went together fairly quickly.  (I did get stuck by pins a couple of times while sewing the bottom of the small one so beware!  You don't want blood spots on your project!)  I didn’t do the curved cutting and piecing described in the book but still was able to get a bit of a wonky look by cutting the strips at odd angles.  You can choose to turn down a cuff as I have done, or leave the sides straight up.  I have noticed that with use the large basket doesn’t like to ‘sit up straight’; it tends to bend over at the batik strip since it is a lighter weight fabric.  If I made another one I would experiment with something to stiffen the pieced strip to help it hold its shape better.

These would make great gifts for a variety of ages since it is so easy to personalize the look for any individual or décor by simply changing fabrics.

Ra57--the main fabric is called Osnaburg--it's a loose weave muslin.  It has a rougher texture.  Then I used batik scraps for the color band.  I hope this helps.
