That is the joy of my life...I began teaching my granddaughter, Allison when she was 9...I had her take lined paper and sew without thread on the lines...she had a real gift and made her first quilt....has done 1 more for herself and another for her niece.....my great-granddaughter (8) is very interested and we will have a quilt date soon....I recently took Allison to a Sat. workshop where our quilt group was making quilts for babies, children and veterans....she done some sewing and lots of ironing and they made the comment she really knew what she was doing....that made Gram proud...

Bev, your granddaughters are so very lucky to have you there to teach them. The very last memories I have of my maternal and last grandparent was when I was 7 she was staying with us helping my mother sew clothes for all us kids (6 at that time, eventually there would be 9 of us) for the summer. She used to come 2x a year June and September to sew clothes. She died while visiting us that year, and I sure missed having a grandmother. Now that I am a grandmother, due to a divorce, I was afraid that I would not get the opportunity to be the type of grandmother to her I would like to be, but today brought about a miracle and a renewed communication with my ex DIL and I am going to have more access to my granddaughter, I had her unexpectantly today and we enjoyed every single minute of the day (she is 4). Do wish I had a granddaughter, but I do have a grandson who is absolutely fascinated with sewing machines and sewing "stuff." Unfortunately, he tends to run off with the "stuff" which is seldom seen again. When I was staying with them and he was 3-4 years old, I spent lots of time clearing messes and rethreading since he just couldn't resist turning machine on when I wasn't watching. He's improved somewhat since then. ;-) He's worn out 2 kid's machines. He's now 6, the same age I was when neighbor lady taught me to sew a straight quarter-inch seam on her treadle machine and helped me make a 9-patch for my bed. Maybe next time I visit ? . . . Caryl
