Since moving out to the country 20 years ago, I could probably count on one hand the number of times we've been visited by trick or treaters. The houses here are pretty spread out and the center of this one-street-light town is at the intersection of two busy state highways so it's not a good place for kids to go around on Halloween night. I imagine their parents drive them to a few places or else take them to some of the nearby villages that have sidewalks and houses are closer together.
But a couple years ago, someone here had a good idea and started a new Halloween tradition. Now residents are encouraged to come out to our town park and dispense treats from the back of their cars. The idea is to decorate the trunk or back of the car and the kids will dress up and go around from car to car collecting treats.
Here is my DH walking our dog past the pavillion where they were cooking hot dogs. I told people that our dog was dressed up as an Irish Setter.
