Quilt With Us

Ladies - I need your opinions, suggestions and honest feedback.  I am 57 and anticipating the possibility of retiring within the next 5 years.  I am toying with the idea of starting a business providing sewing and quilting services.  I need to understand what would provide the most profit. I would love to have my own quilt shop, but not sure that would be financially possible.  As I only have a sewing machine (Janome) and a Janome Embroidery machine, I currently don't have the tools to do elaborate quilting.  Any suggestions as to where to start would be greatly appreciated.

The burp cloth is quick and fun to make. I used flannel, (left over) on one side and diaper material, purchased by the yard on the other. I serged  the edge or you can use binding. They sell for $12 retail. I made few up for Teen Moms, Charity. the pattern is free at CT.

When it come to having a Quilt shop of your own you might want to go get a part time job at one.

A friend of mine sews small items (bibs for children and adults, microwave hotpads, potato bags, etc).  She sells them at a co-op store of which she is a member.  She tells them price she wants to make and store adds on a percentage.  She is obligated to work, I think, 2 or 4 days per year at the store.  Through this store she has made contacts with people who place orders with her for more products I. e. potato bags.  She does well especially in summer months.  Just a get started idea.

Quilting takes time and people don't want to pay the price. That is what I am finding. One person at this site said she made pillows and covers as a business. The small amount I have done does pay better than quilting.

Anita, there is a group on this site called 'Quilting As A Business'. You may want to check them out. There are probably some gals there who could give you some feed back. Good luck.
