Quilt With Us

Things aren't going so good here. My sister tried to take off today. First I called the ambulance (once I found her) cause her b/p was up so high. Needless to say, she refused to go to hospital. We managed to get her back to my apartment but she tried to leave again so I had to call police. Come to find out, I can't do anything to stop her since I don't have power of attorney or she is not court ordered to be with me. If she leaves I have to let her. I couldn't believe they told me this knowing her condition. I'm at my wits end. I called her daughter and told her what happened and they are now going to put her in a home close to them. I'm just heartsick cause I tried to avoid that for her but what she pulled today, she kinda sealed her fate. Needless to say, she is not speaking to me now. So, until they come to get her, I guess it will be the silent treatment for me. She is simply not accepting her limitations and refuses any kind of help. I just can't seem to get my mind on quilting right now.
Please keep her in your prayers,
Hugs
Cathy

well ladies...worse came to pass today. Sister got angry with me for saying something she didn't like and she again took off. Just packed some of her stuff and left. She managed to get cab to one bus terminal and from there went by but to Pittsburgh bus terminal so she could catch yet another bus to her son. I don't know what she is thinking she will do there. they are trying to find an assisted living place for her but I don't know where she will go in meantime. I just fear something will happen to her in Pittsburgh. Not a good place for her to be in her condition. Daughter called bus terminal to speak with her and even she counldn't get through to her. Please pray she makes it to her destination safely. I so worked up I don't know what to do with myself. Just sitting here crying my eyes out. I feel like I've failed her.

My prayers are with you. A few years back I suffered from such deep depression that I too didn't know how to take care of myself. Like you with your sister, my husband had to make some decisions that neither of us liked very much (including putting me in the hospital against my will a few times!) But he knew (with encouragement from my therapist) that was the safest place for me at the time. And I gave him the silent treatment sometimes!! But please be assured that this is what she needs right now, even if it isn't what either of you want. Keep me informed as to how you both are doing (if you want), I care.

Thank you all for your prayers and concern and thank you for the advice too. I just didn't know where to turn.

She might be upset now, but you are doing what is best for her and yourself. She will get the care and be close to family. I Will keep your family in prayers.
Bless you,
Debbie

Call your local Adult Protective Services and ask them to help you get started with guadianship. I am sorry that your sister is ill, but I know it is in her best interest to have someone legally responsible for her care, since she is not able to meet her own needs. Any hospital Social Worker will know, or can find, the number to APS--whatever it is called in your area. In general, a power of attorney is not sufficient in these circumstances, someone will have to be a court appointed guardian. Nursing homes and other types of resident care facilities are not a bad as they seem--she will be safe, have 24 hour care, nutritious meals, interactions with other people...it will probably be better than you think. She will likely have a very hard adjustment period--2 or 3 weeks--moving is hard for everyone and worse when a person doesn't have their full mind. Find a good Social Worker and let them help you.
