Quilt With Us

So I've been trying to decide if I want to hand quilt one of the tops I posted previously.  It was the broken arrow quilt.  I also posted pictures of the calligraphy designs I wanted to use.  I recently traced the calligraphy designs on some muslin fabric and stitched it out.  Looked pretty good.  The problem now is how to transfer the designs to the quilt. I know it wouldn't be much of a problem for me except for the fact that I already have the quilt sandwiched and ready to quilt. It was the last thing I got to do before we left the house we sold.  So now being in an RV and extremely limited space I don't really want to take the quilt apart just to trace the designs onto the quilt top. Has anyone ever basted the backing and the batting to the quilt top and then traced a design onto the quilt top for hand quilting?

I've marked the quilt after basting. I've used a washable pencil or a chalk pencil, or echo-quilted by eye.

Kathy, I never mark my quilts for hand quilting before basting them. I either use stencils with a white chalk pencil or use markless methods, such as masking tape or contact paper. I couldn’t find your calligraphy designs, but could you use contact paper to make stencils for them? For more complex designs, I make the outline out of one piece of contact paper and then make smaller template pieces to use for the interior parts of the design. The same templates can be used multiple times. This way, I don’t have to worry about getting the marks out or worry about the chemicals in some marking pens showing up at a later date.
