I was asked yesterday, if I ever pre-wash my batting. Never thought about it...but, I answered that I thought it might pull apart in areas. Then later, thought if you had allergies, would that be something you'd want to do. What are your thoughts?

Nope, never prewashed batting; I use fusible batting so if washed the "fusible" would be gone. Years ago I prewashed fabric but never do now. I like the "new" feel of unwashed; pressing unwashed is easier than washed which causes more wrinkles.
Comment by Trudy/WI on January 29, 2013 at 11:29am Nope, never do it. I find that in general there is so little shrinkage after the product is finished anyway and I happen to like that textured look after it is washed and dried. I think products are made differently than they used to be, I know shrinkage used to be more of a problem in the past, I have definitely noticed a difference in the amount a quilt shrinks now compared to 20 years ago when I was a fairly new quilter. I would think if allergies were an issue, wouldn't washing the completed quilt later produce the same results as pre-washing?? Just curious.
I never pre-wash batting . I put it in the dryer on the Air-Fluff cycle and run it for a bit to remove the wrinkles. Unless I have got to , I don't even prewash fabric. It gets too many wrinkles that way. lol
Comment by Cindy on January 28, 2013 at 8:05pm Nope, no pre-washing here either. Time is too precious to take up more of it in an added time-consuming step. The one time I was forced to wash a batting, it couldn't be used when it was all said and done. It went straight to the garbage can. I will NEVER pre-wash a battting again!

Comment by Barbara Graham on January 27, 2013 at 4:56pm Prewash? What's that? I don't do it fabrics or batting. I do the same as Mary, spray a little water, throw it in the dryer. The whole mess will be washed at the same time once I have the binding on.
Comment by Mary, Tewksbury MA on January 27, 2013 at 2:34pm Never prewash either. Batting is sprayed with a little water and then into dryer to knock out the wrinkles. I have in truth used batting in table runners right from the bag, didn't seem to make any difference.
No horse in next week's game. I always watch but as a born and bred NE fan can't really cheer on another team, doesn't seem right. At least NHL is back, and there's always Hockey East!
Comment by Pam/NY on January 27, 2013 at 1:38pm I'm with you PQ no prewashing in this house!! We are going through withdrawal also...made some meatballs for next weekend's party...Go Ravens!!!
I've never done it, but I have heard of pre-washing 100% cotton batting to prevent shrinking after the quilt is quilted. Most batts nowadays have only a 3-5% shrinkage factor, so it's not as big an issue has it used to be.
Comment by Prairie Quilter/NE on January 27, 2013 at 12:32pm I'd be thrown into quilt jail by the quilt police because I don't even prewash my fabrics! I've not heard of prewashing the batting. I have tossed it into the dryer to help relax the wrinkles. Good question, though.
Going through football withdrawal this weekend...
