Quilt With Us

What is your favorite quilting magazine?

Quilters I need help. It is time to renew what magazines I have been getting for quilting and I do not know if I want to get the same ones again. What is your favorite and why? Which ones offer the best instructions? I am still a beginner and which do you think offer the most ideas. Personally for myself I do not like ones that offer a series to finish a quilt. I want to see the whole product in front of me. I guess I do not visualize well. Well wish I could sew all day but housework is calling.

I used to subscribe to a lot of quilt mags. Then a couple of yrs ago I decided to cut out the patterns I wanted to keep & toss out the rest of the mag as they were starting to take up too much room. Wow, what an eye opening experience that was! I didn't realize until I did that how many patterns out of each mag were the same and this repeated yr & yr. The vast majority were log cabins, pineapples, & 9 patchs. That is when I realized that I no longer needed to buy mags because I already had books that contained those patterns. Plus you can get so many of them for free over the internet. If there were more original patterns published, I would gladly continue to buy them. I will say, however, that I still enjoy Love of Quilting by Fons & Porter. At least their stuff seems to be more original and they have good hints.

I've been getting American Patchwork & Quilting forever - or so it seems. Love it. Also get McCalls and enjoy it. If I had to give one up it would be McCalls. I've subscribed to a lot of others but let them drop. Every now and then I may get one at the Newstand just to check them out.

My favorites are Quilter's World, and the Fons and Porter publications are also great. If you are looking for a magazine that has quick and simple projects, I really like Quick and Easy Quilts.

My very favorite magazine is Quilters' Newsletter. Lots of well written articles, great instructions with super accompanying pictures and diagrams, and the projects are a variety...so you can learn a new technique or try a new way of doing something or find one that just holds great appeal. They do have some BOM projects but those are extras rather than the focus articles/patterns. And they have a website with web extras so it's kind of a bonus.

I've subscribed to a variety of quilting magazines over the years. Right now I receive three. My favorites are Love of Quilting--wide variety of styles, excellent instructions, great results--and Quilter's Newsletter--lots of information about different styles of quilting, history of quilts, news about the quilting world. You might want to check out the websites for each and look at previews of issues to give you an idea of their contents.
