QuiltLady, yes you are moving in the right direction, business cards and a brochure. You might also want to consider postcards too, that you can tack on bulletin boards and hand outs that the stores have on the counters. I know that I've picked up a couple that my quilt shop had laying on the counter.

Hello everyone, I'm also glad that this group was started. I love to quilt but don't know what to do with them after I've finished. I just can't give them all away after so much time and money so I would like to try to sell them so I also need to learn how to start my own quilting business.

At the moment my full time job pays too well to give it up, but as we look ahead to retirement (a few years out there yet), we've been considering what we might want to pursue later and quilting is on my list. So I don't have any experience to offer (other than supervising people in a business environment), but I would like to see if a quilting business in really an option in the future.

I just finished reading Merry May and Lind J. Hahn's book on "Insider's Guide to Quilting Careers". Lots of good information, but it left me more scared than optimistic about the chances of making a second career in quilting. So like several others already members, I'm looking for some encouragement (and maybe a good dose of courage as well).

I would like to join this group. I am teaching at the momment and would like to get into designing and publishing my own patterns. I was in business for 22 yrs. with my own hair salon. But have retired as I moved with DH job, so would like to do something I'm passionate about. So I have also join the group designing but I know there is a lot more to it than that on the business side of things. So would be glad to learn from others experiences.

OK now that is over, Owning a quilt store is undoublable THE most enjoyable thing I have ever done in my life with the exception of holding my Grandchildren/Children. There is nothing more rewarding than to stand in your own store with the Beautiful quilts and fabrics all around you and know it is all yours, bills and all, and to welcome a new customer or to welcome back a returning customer. You can not believe the pride you can feel when you set and drink a cup of coffee and just look around and know that you and your friends have created all this and you get to enjoy it everyday.

FIrst thing I would suggest is a class on runing a business, Not just assume you can do it. Also a class on the finanical end of running a business, small business bureau will give them in most areas. I just closed my quilt store and will be online now and I have learned a lot the hard way. DO NOT HIRE YOUR FRIENDS. It is great to have there input, but hard to tell them this is what you expect from an employee. Do not want to sound only negetive, only offering advise I chose not to follow cause I knew better. Famous last word!

I am so glad you have started this group. I was let go from my job after 14 years, and applied to the self employment benefits program, here in Ontario. I was accepted and start classes on Monday to launch my own pattern publishing company!!! Then I came online and this group had started, perhaps this is a good omen for me. I am looking forward to chatting with everyone and sharing, of course!!!

I would like to join this group. I have given it alot of thought about starting a business selling quilts and other things. I love to sew and make things. I have alot of questions on how to price things, where is the best place for a store or selling out of your home, just things like this. Thanks so much for starting this group.
