About Me
After years of doing doll clothes for the grandchildren, my youngest daughter got me into quilting. Piecing a quilt was how I taught her to sew a seam, but I hadn't done much of it, do to time constraints. Now I am retired and sew everyday. Love bright colors and trying to figure out combinations. Gotten husband involved as well.

Need Ideas

Posted on March 7, 2015 at 3:52am 7 Comments

Our quilt group often gets material donated.  It just shows up in our closet at the church.  This week as we were going through the closet, 5yds of Brocade was sitting there.

It is a deep midnight blue with gold leaves.  As we would not use it in our quilting I got to bring it home. Now I just need to decide what to make.  It would make a perfect fancy jacket, but I do not wear them anymore or make them.  Pillows?  Seems like a waste.

Any ideas for simple project?  Maybe…

New Year snow days

Posted on January 3, 2015 at 4:12am 7 Comments

Here in MI we have been having pretty good weather and we have still been getting our walks in. Snow moving in today with cold winds.

Haven't posted in sometime.  Our quilt group has been busy since Sept and I am trying to use up 3 boxes of scraps.  Made 5 baby quilts for the VA hospital in Nov. They have an annual baby shower for vets that have returned from service.  Finished a single size scrappy for an orphanage, they requested 10 for the home and we cut and made 11 in our…

Little Dragons

Posted on March 20, 2014 at 5:00am 13 Comments

My current project.  I just loved this pattern and had to make it.  Of course I never make just one of anything so this is one of two.  The second one has different background, but I made all of the dragons/trees the same.  Still in the process of quilting the second one.  This one is going to…

progress on projects

Have been reading everyone's postings.  I am really tired of the snow here in MI.  Sun is out today and up to 40 so DH and I will be going out for a walk....fresh air...

I spent January making Hop to it applique quilt.  I had purchased the book several years ago on sale for $3 and decided to use up some batik scraps.  All except the background was scraps I have been collecting, including the sashing.  I surprised myself by FMQ, it was not a hard as I though.  I posted a pic. …

copyright pattern use

Posted on February 1, 2014 at 11:53am 7 Comments

I have several patterns that I purchased and have made into quilts.  While I know that you cannot duplicate for commercial use, my question is:  I want to make several of these different patterns and sell at our annual fundraiser.  Is that against the copyright?  I do not see it as a conflict since I purchased the pattern for my personal use and also make said patterns for my charity quilts.  We are not selling any quilts an a regular basis.  We just pick some to sell during our fundraiser…

Dawn, I want to thank you so much for the lovely comments that you made about the doll clothes!!  I really appreciate it.  Yes, I'm looking forward to making clothes for the American doll soon.  Lorenza is a little young for those yet but I'll wait!  LOL  By the way, I must say that you do beautiful work!  It's a pleasure meeting you!  Rusty  (Dawn Frisch)  : )

Dawn, I made my blocks four and a half inches for that scrappy patchwork diagonals quilt.  The split blocks actually started out to Chinese Coins but I didn't like the way it was coming together.  I had the triangle blocks left over from another quilt so I just put them together.

I am currently working on another top that I call "Bits and Pieces" and hope to post soon.  It's not complete yet.  As I had so many strips and pieces tucked in my stash (too small or irregular to cut blocks), I decided to sew the pieces together to make blocks.  Quiltmaker magazine came out with quilt on the cover using the same idea.  It's taking more sewing time in making the blocks but I really like the outcome.  It's another good way to make use of those scraps!

I only doing piecing (and sometimes, the binding) and hand off my tops to others in my group that either have quilting machines or longarms.  My old machine is good for straight stitching and that's about it.

Hi Dawn - I posted the other quilt I was telling you about.  I called it "Scrap Blocks" for lack of a better name.  I just turned the blocks in a different direction.  I do wish I had added one more row.  It looks like an unfinished chain to me.

I work with a group at a church as well.  We make and donate quilts to the Quilts of Valor and Quilts for Kids organizations.  In addition to our own fabrics, people donate goo gobs of stuff so our stash at the church stays pretty full.  People also donate blocks and unfinished tops.  We don't waste, either.  One lady in the group works with a dog and cat rescue and makes beds for the shelters.  We give her all of our fabric and batting scraps (what I call "snippets") and she uses it for filling.  Someone contacted her about making beds for the canine soldiers in Afghanistan so she made a bunch and shipped them.  They deserve some comfort, too!

Thanks for your comments on help to get mom to down size. She always says, the Goodwill does not want my stuff. Which I know is not true since they always take my junk. My husband mother gave every Christmas for 10 years from her things. But my mom only talks and never does.

Thanks, Dawn,  I did buy the kit for the Beach Walk,  I really don't like to take so much time to work on a quilt, I get very bored if it doesn't go fast enough.

Your guilts are just beautiful!

Thanks for your bin idea. I do need a plan of action to stop and work on the scrapes. Love your scrapes quilts!  My daughter would love the fish quilt. She is fish crazy!

Hi Dawn...you asked about the animal quilt top I just completed... yes, it's from a pattern that I purchased at a quilt show in Marshall last weekend. If you just need the outlines of the animals, I'd suggest getting a simple coloring book and tracing the ones you want from it. Have fun!
