I have obtained a pile of men's ties. Separated them into washable and those Italian silks. Washed by hand all the washable, now what do I do to clean those silks. If I want to make a strip quilt wall hanging what size do I cut them into? Do I take them apart, take out any linings and press flat?? Does anyone have pattern or can driect me to some information please......Marge in FL PS I want to tie one on LOL

Hurricane Materials

Posted on August 31, 2010 at 3:50pm 9 Comments

When one of my quilting buddies (Lorie) said lets visit some different shops, off we went in the hunt for materials. You know when they start to talk Hurricanes in FL we have to stock up on water, batteries, snacks and of course quilting materials.

We headed south to Orange Park and visited Country Crossroads, now that was a interesting shop, all kinds of materials you can think of and I discovered the material I had run out of for a church project.…

Quilter's Newsletter had a really cute Gingham Dog/Calico Cat quilt a few years ago that tesselated.  I really liked it but never made it--so many quilts, so little time.  I took my daughter back to college and got her settled in yesterday and today.  We had a lot to do--she hadn't brought any of her summer clothes home, and she has very little space, so things had gotten beyond her.  We did a lot of sorting and organizing--I came home with the car fuller than when I took her.  I miss her so badly tonight--I'm really down.  My son is home--he graduated in December and doesn't start his graduate program until June or July (assuming he is admitted--and mostly I'm positive he will be).  He had found a job and was suupposed to get his hours today, but the lady didn't have the schedule when he called, then didn't call back when she said she would so he is very discouraged tonight.  I think we need chocolate.  :) Sorry--didn't mean to dump!

Fons & Porter's Baby Quilt issue has a lot of really cute, original ideas for baby quilts, but I also noticed in the new catalog from CT one with owls--it was adorable and would be great done in the colors they used since it could be for either a boy or a girl.  I'm quilting a blue and pink baby quilt right now--it's for my guild's 2010 challenge.  I will probably give it to our niece for her little girl.  I made a quilt for her older one, a boy, and she keeps stealing his quilt and cuddling up with it.  Decided she had better have one too before she embarks on a life of crime!  I'm hoping DS will have found a job soon--he needs something to keep him busy, especially since his sister heads back to school Friday.  He won't hear about his application for grad school for a few more weeks, but we're praying for that and for him to get an assistantship that will cover his tuition.  Do you go to the big quilt show in Jacksonville every September?  I haven't gone since we moved here, but would like to go next year if i can get some ladies from here to go too.  It's such a good show.

Also--take care of the cough!  I hate that about bronchitis.

I hate it that I missed your message!  sounds like you are very busy.  Hey, eating out three days in a row sounds good to me.  I keep having (getting) to adjust from two to four to three to cook for, depending on who is home.  Our son graduated from college Dec. 10, so he is home at least until June or July when his graduate program starts.  I really think it would be better for him to live there than at home, both because of the 45 mile drive each way and because he and his dad are too old/not old enough to live together peacefully.  It's not horrible--just the two of them butting heads about everything from how to load the dishwasher to, oh, whatever....I remember my dad and my brother being the same way.  Thanks for the good wishes about getting better--I am taking Mucinex, and it does help.  I am avoiding the herbal tea, however. ;)

Well, I usually plan far more than i actually accomplish--like those casseroles i planned to have made for Thanksgiving Day and in my freezer by now.....

The Double Wedding Ring was practice for the bed-size version--i used the Shar Jorgenson templates and it was pretty straight forward, not as hard as I thought it would be. Sounds like you have more than enough to keep you busy right now. I realized our guild show is in March and so far I only have one wall hanging to go in it. And I don't think the DWR will be finished--maybe by next year's show. Oh, well...I don't make them to show them. have a happy Thanksgiving!

As my kids have told me it's cool to say, "inorite?"

By the way--remember how I said I was going to get both quilts basted? I didn't run out of time, but I did run out of patience and oomph--besides, it will take quite a while to quilt the first one, and DS is moving back home for a while to work and then do a master's in teaching for a year. I'll be able to rope him in to do lots of jobs.

Sounds like you are a busy bee..... Nothing much going on here. I will be working on my DGS's christmas quilt. He is in the Navy and the quilt is patriotic. Getting things ready for Thanksgiving. Kids come home and we enjoy the big turkey day on Friday. Have a great quilty day!

Marge--I don't know what I would do without him, but it looks like after 30 years he could read my mind, right? Or at least know what I mean by "the thingy came out of the thingy."

I can see you doing wheel'es or how ever you spell it LOL all around the room and putting a basting stick here and there. Did I tell you I went to a church garage sale and bought a box of quilted pieces? The whole box for $2.00 inside was old hand sewn squares with set of tulip design, basket, sun bonnet sue, butterflies all in old material, they are so yellowed will have to wash by hand, very interesting...then what will I do with them, any suggestions? Over the weekend worked on a 4x4 square with tiny pieces making a fan minature quilt all by hand work while watching the football games. You can't keep a good woman down even when it gets to cold.
