About Me
I began quilting in 2001 by taking an adult ed class and haven't stopped since. It is definitely my passion. I am currently renovating my 24 year old daughter's bedroom into my own sewing studio. I belong to a very small (8 members)guild called Odyssey Quilters and we do lots of donating, shop hopping and enjoying each others company. The same group of girls meets every Tuesday for Stitch N Bitch with the guild meeting being the second Tuesday of the month.

Making a Design Wall

Posted on August 28, 2009 at 4:37pm 9 Comments

I have recently turned my daughter's old bedroom into my long awaited sewing room. I have been enjoying it sooooo much. I am considering making one wall into a design wall and would like to hear from anyone that has made one of their own, on how you did it, materials etc. My husband is very handy and is wiling to make it for me. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, I did do the quilting but I can't really take the credit. I have a Pfaff Grand Quilter with the Q-Bot system (so it is computerized). I do some free-hand, but the Q-Bot does such a great job, I don't do very much. A friend and I bought the system together and it gets to live at my house.

I had seen a picture of the star somewhere and realized it was HST, so sketched it out and did my version of it. I do love the fall colors, but HATE what comes next. I live in ND and the winters are brutal!

When my oldest daughter came back from her honeymoon she was very upset that I turned her room into a sewing room. Maybe she thought she could come back home. LOL. Any way I never put up a design wall, I bought one of those sticky things that is suppose to stick to the wall, it falls down after a hour or so. I am trying to get DH to make one for me, maybe using thin Styrofoam and staple the sticky material on it. Don't know if will work, but I think I am going to give it a try.

Hi Trish: I wasn't sure which wall I wanted for my design wall so I bought those temporary hooks from Scotch, bought some oil cloth (the kind from table clothes with the flannel backing), added groumets to the top and hooked them over the hooks. Work's great and if I want to rearrange (which I have done twice) it's moveable.

Hi Trish: Thanks so much for the info on the Firecracker quilt. I'm so excited because I just ordered the pattern from the website. Can't wait to check the mailbox this week. Your thoughtfulness and kindness are greatly appreciated. Thanks again and happy quilting.

So, that was the disappearing 9-patch I keep hearing about...LOL. A copy of the directions was handed out at my Mom's quilt guild when I went as a guest, but they called it something else, and it said something about you wouldn't know what it would look like until you had sewn the blocks back together. Glad to see that it sews up sew nicely. I think we will have to do that at my quilt guild as a challenge. :-D

Hi Trish, We are 89 miles from Livinston and Clyde Park is not very far from there so probably about 1 1/2 hour drive. My son and family live in Livingston so I get there occasionally. Funny to see people send their quilts that far for quilting. I have only paid to have one done. I have many tops waiting to be quilted though.I liked the SS quilt blocks. I plan to do the Darlene's Dear Jane Slackers next. It looks fun. It is a year long. I think it will be very popular. Look it up. Our weather is so great right now. Talk soon. Irene

Hi Trish, thank you for your comment on my Southern Stars quilt. I will just call it my Southern Stars quilt since that is what the pattern is called. I like that name especially since I did it in Civil War fabs. I would do another quilt along too if it was a pattern I liked as well as I did the Southern Stars.

Have a fun weekend, thanks again!! Linda

Hi Trish, I amazed at how much attention my simple Shadow Daisy quilt is getting. Actually that is just the top, I hadn't really decided on how to quilt it until just now. I am going to Shadow quilt it, what else! LOL I will hand quilt around the flowers and the continue to bring out the design creating a shadow effect, starting about 1/4 inch from applique and then every 1/2 inch. to fill the block.
I really like your Harbour Lights in the Windows quilt, the lighthouse is our guild's logo.

Hi Trish, There are several of us Trish's listed. I noticed you live in Ct. I have a daughter and family in Branford. Just wanted to say your state is beautiful and your quilts are also! Thanks for posting them online!
