We welcomed two grandson's into our family: Seth Christopher Borland born 3/17/09, red hair blue eyes and Aaron Daniel Cornelius born 7/26/09, lots of brown hair and eyes are still that newborn baby color.

My husband and I traveled to Charleston SC in June to see our youngest… Continue

Vicky, I just realized I didn't respond to you about Stevenson (home of Skamania Lodge)! Yikes! The shop is called Birdhouse Quilting. When you go past the turn off for the Lodge and come into Stevenson there is a blinker light at the corner where the courthouse sits. You turn right there, and the shop is about the third business down the hill on the left, just before the alley. I will be there tomorrow to teach a class. And I just realized how tired I am! Looong week at work, and a lot to do this weekend to get quilts ready to hang at the local library for a show during February. Stay warm! Kathy

Hi Vicky ... gosh, I'm so sorry I'm just getting back to you - apparently I've never checked the "comments" on my photos. Thank you for your comment. It was very kind of you.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, Vicky! It was a great day with friends at work taking me to lunch, a party at work, then dinner with my husband. And the night before my quilt group had dinner, cake and presents for me!

I like to do my quilt shopping in person, and try my best to support the local quilt shops. I figure that when I need advice or help picking colors the internet just ain't gonna do, and you have to get to know which of the Fabric Depot ladies are quilters and can really help you, IF they have time! I agree, you need to feel that fabric! I have been working part time and will be teaching at the new quilt shop in Stevenson (east of me on Highway 14). She pays in fabric so it helps keep some of my expenses down! Okay, yes, I always owe her money at the end of my day! It sure is fun, though! The last time I worked a friend came in and we had permission to rearrange the store. We got busy moving things around and then I got busy waiting on customers! The owner had been off through December recovering from hip replacement and snow. I looked and the day before they might have sold $25, but I came in at $580.00!! One friend stopped by and bought $375 of that! Crazy fun! We got the shop all done, the customers left happy, and I got out of there only an hour after closing. And the owner loved what we did, which was the big thing. She is expanding her space so I am excited to see the new classroom when I go for the Super Bowl Party.

Work has been slow lately, at least as far as development applications go. I talked to one guy today who came in with a problem, and when I got done with him I had not solved his problem, only made it worse! But he left laughing about it! Something to do with the county information from the computer. I like working with people and helping them, but don't get as much of it at the city as I did at the county. Not sure why really, except I am doing some things I didn't do before. It's a good place to work, very caring.

Three days off! I want to keep going on Baby Joe's quilt so I can get it done and work on Baby Ayden's quilt! And then I get a discount at ETC, the quilt shop in Hood River, so a friend and I might go up there tomorrow afternoon. She has to wait for guys to deliver and install the part for her new quilting machine that is supposed to make it work right. She got one with the computer add-on for the short arm quilting machines and it had a defective part. She's had it set up for a over a week but couldn't use it! And the husband and I will probably take a drive Sunday to deliver a birthday card to his son, and then stop and see my daughter and grandkids. And I am going to sleep as late as I can all three days! At least until 7:00!! In fact, it's getting late enough I could head in to bed with my book....

Later, Kathy

Hi, Vicky,
Washougal is about 20-25 miles east of Vancouver and Portland on Highway 14. Straight west from you, but on the other side of the state, kinda.
I have two grandsons coming and last night I pinned the quilt for the one due next month. Decided I would quilt it on my regular machine rather than the mid arm. The other baby quilt is identical, and the top is done, so it will get the same treatment. Really cute fabrics called Count Your Blessings, don't remember the maker off hand. I got it at Fabric Depot in Portland. It is squares with little bears and their families. The thing that sold me on it for the two boys was the square with Gramma making a quilt, and Grampa making a boat in the woodshop. I quilt, he does carpentry. Too perfect! And then my husband has a great grandchild coming in May! Waiting to hear the sex before I get going on that one. Since the dad comes from a long line of all males for about three generations we all expect a boy, but...
And work does get in the way of quilting! I had a meeting after work last night and I have one tonight, but Wednesday night is our Twisted Sisters Quilt Group meeting, and they are have a birthday party for me! I guess we won't get a lot of sewing done, but we'll have fun! What type of work do you do? I work for the city of Camas as a land use planner and I really like it, except when it gets in the way of quilting!
Take care, Kathy

Hi Vicky, I looked up the black and white kitty quilt, it is from The Quilter Magazine, March 2005, the name of the pattern is Tuxedo Cats. Their website is www.the quiltermag.com. I think you can still find the issue. The other pattern for the penguin quilt was actually from the same issue. I didn't realize that until I went looking for it! It is called Afternoon Slumber, though I had to seriously change the colors for a boy and add to it to make it large enough for my grandson's bed. If you can't find it I'd be happy to let you borrow my copy.

Love your stories. My baby quilt is from a book and I used fabrics from my stash because I was in a hurry to get started on it and didn't want to make the 45 minuet drive to the quilt shop. It's a Patrict Lose pattern in his book Special Delivery Quilts. You can probably get just the pattern on line if you didn't want to get the book. The book has lots of really cute baby quilts and has been around since 2000. I got mine a long time ago but I think you could find one online. I just have one son who is deploying to Afghanistan (Air Force). He did get home for Christmas but only because he was deploying again so quickly. Otherwise, he wasn't coming home. It's very hard not having him around at all. I only got to see him 3 times last year and now he won't be back in the states untill fall. He does email including pictures so that helps alot. I actually finsihed something today and will post a picture when I get one ready.

I agree with the not getting bored part. I also ascribe to the theory that when I retire, I won't have the money to buy fabric, so I better stock up now so I won't be bored then either! There are times like now that I wish I had more than 6 weeks off over the winter, but I'll cram in a bunch of things between now and spring garden clean-up season, but will probably have to finish most next winter! No thanks on the swampland....

Hi Vicky, Thank you for the kind comments on my cats and cat quilt. Yes the two kittens in front are brother and sister, their mother is inspecting my stitches. The Singapura breed is quite small. The quilt took 5 years to applique and I hand quilted it. I changed the cat in the upper left to be a Singapura. I have also boughten a chicken pattern from the same pattern people. I can't seem to get started on that one. You have a lovely family. I'm hoping for a grandchild sometime in the next couple of years. My daughter and her husband are thinking about starting a family. Since I am a quilter have started thinking about baby quilts right now. "So they will have a chose (of baby quilts) when it happens." Hope you stay well and warm. It really is turning cold here in Texas too.
