Last word on those darn turtles

Finally got that paper-pieced turtle quilt set off to my sister in law.  She loved it, thought it was so cute.  I really wish I could post a photo, I've tried everything I can think of.  My Vivitar digital camera software just isn't going to cooperate.  Anyway, if any of you have gone to Java House quilts and seen the original pattern, you'll have a pretty good idea what it looks like.  Only real difference is the fact that I used a whole strip of a cute cartoon turtle print for the outer…

How, when I'm being so careful, can it NOT come out right?

I recently started a new project, or rather picked up one that had been hanging fire for some time.  My brother used to like to buy me fabric; trouble is, he liked the large-scale scenic prints.  One day he came home with a large scale scenic of pheasants around old farmyards.  I got a notion, and used the "Hunter's Star" block in red and white, and blue and white, fussy cutting the pheasants fabric for setting blocks.  Somehow I managed to cut twice as many pheasants as I needed, and the…

Finally! Finishing those darn turtles.

Well, I should be able to see the last of those darn paper-pieced turtles by the end of this week.  I got all (I hope!) of the machine quilting--in the ditch, no less, finished up Sunday, and got the binding cut and sewn onto the front side yesterday.  Now all that's left is to whip-stitch it down on the back.  I may be able to get my friend to post a photo on the website--cross your fingers.  My computer repair person tells me the problem I'm having with posting photos is the software that…

Those darn paper-pieced turtles!

Those darn paper-pieced turtles have almost driven me to banging my head against the wall.  After I finally got them all pieced, I started setting the blocks together, but wound up setting the first four turtles with their heads pointing into the center of the circle.  Then the remaining two turtle blocks would NOT match up the way they were supposed to.  So I had to rip them all apart and start over.  What made this even worse is that the blocks were oversized to the setting blocks and had…

Update on Joys of Paper Piecing

Actually, I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem I've encountered with these turtles.  And I'm not sure I can describe the problem well enough for anybody to visualize the design and be able to help me.  The block (one turtle) consists of 6 portions, four of which are paper pieced, and are mirror images of each other.  The two outer portions are like triangles with a half-circle cutout in the middle; these form the turtle's legs and the "ocean" background--the other two paper-pieced…

The joy of paper piecing!

I have no idea why I keep starting projects that call for paper piecing, since I always get so frustrated by it.  It's very wasteful of fabric, it also wastes thread, since I invariably wind up ripping out almost as much as I actually sew, since I don't always get the pieces laid out right to cover the area they're supposed to.  But the best (!) part to paper piecing is having to remove all the paper afterwards.  Having said all that, I just have to tell you about the project I'm working on…
