Quilt With Us

I recently attended an interesting class at the seniors centre in which we coloured designs on prewashed tightly woven muslin. You can use designs from a colouring book and regular crayons, which makes it an ideal project for kids.We traced the design with a cheap black gel pen from the dollar store onto the muslin, using a window as a light box if necessary., then ironed the design to butcher paper to make it stiffer for colouring and then coloured the design as usual.Once done heat set by putting face down on a paper towel and pressing, then peel away the butcher paper and you are ready to use the design in a pillow, bag or quilt.

I used the same idea with a couple of girls I entertained for an hour after school. I also did the same with my grandson. Theses kids had to do the drawing first. Then I made the blocks into cushions that they could cuddle with.

I have made a few smaller quilts where I did tracings or used iron on transfers and the coloring. Then I used stem stitch to embroider the outlines.

What a fun idea!  Sounds like your senior center offers some interesting options.

I had my girls color their own quilt blocks when they were each about 5 years old. One block had their handprints (I traced them and they colored them) and their signature, in another block they drew a picture of their family, etc. We used regular crayons and I ironed freezer paper on the back of the blocks to stabilize them for coloring. I took each girl to the quilt store and she picked out the sashing, binding and backing fabrics. Their quilts hung in their rooms for several years, until they were replaced by wall hangings they each made as their first machine sewing project. A wonderful keepsake of that age!
