Quilt With Us

I was looking for an alternative tied quilt option and came across this Decatur Knot.

Is anyone familiar with this method of tying quilts?  I was wondering if the knots held.  I like the idea of no tails, but I'm a little obsessive about making sure the knots stay tied.  It aggravates me to no end to tie a quilt and then have them come out in the wash or loosen up over time.  I've taken to taking two stitches in the same place and then doing a modified surgeon's knot (triple wrapped square knot.)

The graduation quilt I'm working on really doesn't lend itself to tying, just my opinion, but I am no good at machine quilting on my domestic machine and I don't want to send it out to be longarm quilted (usually a 3 month wait in my neck of the woods).  I have resigned myself to tying it, but would like to have it be as unnoticeable as possible.  This seemed like a viable alternative.  Any thoughts?

I have never done this knot, but I wonder if it would indeed hold through many washings?  I vote for machine "tacking"; either a zig-zag-in-place, or satin-stitch, in every place you would hand tie it.

The zig-zag would be my choice. Wished you lived closer, you could use my longarm.

I have use the stitch for sewing on a button and it works really good.

I have done a zig/zag in place stitch for every tie. It is sturdy and you don't have the ties. This quilt may get a lot of use and washed a lot being it's a college bound kid!

Good option, Gae, and I toyed with that idea, it just came down to time.  I don't have the time (my own fault for procrastinating) to hand quilt at my speed - even big-stitch.

How about using the 'big stitch' technique you mentioned in an older post?
