Quilt With Us

I have several quilts that I want add buttons on. They are for a snowman, eyes, mouth, belly and Santa eyes. What is the most common way to do that? Is it done after all quilting is done? You can see on the back where you attached them to the front? I can't really vision any other way.......anyone have ideas on that?

As a LAQ I ask that embellishments are put on after I  quilt it. I have in some cases with huge quilts let them put them on before, only IF it will be custom quilted. It's still fairly dangerous and I have to be really careful. If you decide to put them on before just know your LAQ can only get so close  to the button so the space where the button is will puff up a touch.

I do the same thing. I like using Superiors Bottom Line thread for this as it is very thin, yet tough, so it doesn't show much on the back side.

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely follow it. Seems like Carol said it perfectly. Thanks Carol.

Carol said it perfectly. I wouldn't change a word.

I have always attached embellishments (button, beads, etc.) after quilting.  These things would be impediments to doing the quilting.  And I usually sew through all layers, burying the knots in the batting.  You will be able to see where they are attached from the back, of course.  I wouldn't use buttons on anything intended for use by small children, for safety reasons.
