I am having trouble finding the measurements for the square's size to be able to make a Disappearing Nine Patch square that will measure 12 and 1/2" (12" finished).  If you have EQ or you are a great mathmetician, no I didn't say magician,  I would appreciate any help you will share. I made the first ones using 4 and 1/2" squares and that came out too small and so I used 5" squares and they are too large.  What size square is a girl to use??????

Personally, I will start with 5" squares,  I don't think the size of the squares/rectangles should matter much as long as it will finish as a 12-inch block.

if 4 1/2" is too small and 5" is too big... what about 4 3/4?  I'm lousey at math, so am really not much help here, Gayle... sorry :(.

I haven't done the hidden nine patch yet.. my mind is still 'fuzzy' from doing the hidden four patch, which I don't plan on doing ever again.

Whem I did mine I think I used 4 3/4" strips scant seams. But when we do these there  charity quilts or kids quilts so that could be off alittle because when done I'm not to worried about size. The cut sounds right I can't find paper where i have this in ink.

Gayle,  you mentioned that the 5" squares were to large.  Once you fracture the 9 patch, can you trim the 4 pieces to size??  This way  you would get your 12.5 unfinished.  Knowing that a 4 patch 12.5 unfinished is 6.5 inches,,, trim to this size.  Hope this makes  sense.

Thanks Shelia and Betty.   I will check into what you are giving me. Aida I appreciate what your link was from you but I had already tried the 4.5" and it didn't work. I will check these others out.

It won't work that way Aida.  I used 4.5" blocks and and the un-finished square measures 12".  I used a very precise 1/4" seam, leaning to the scant side of 1/4".

Hi Gayle,

I found this on the internet...it will give a 12-1/2" square which should give a 12-inch finished block.
