Quilt With Us

I haven't posted here for awhile, mostly because I haven't been sewing much.  Partially because I've been super busy (playing and working and travel), but mostly because my sewing room was such a mess.  Now, I know you're thinking your room is a mess too, but this was bad.  Really bad.  Last Fall I went on two different quilting retreats, had a blast.  But when I returned, I just dumped everything into "the room".  Now this room was already bad, because it's much much smaller than my previous house.  This is a 10x10 spare bedroom, and in my previous house, it was the formal living room, at least 2x larger.  So this poor room was already stuffed to the gills, then I toss stuff in willy nilly.

And one of the disadvantages (?) of working for a quilting book publisher (Martingale, That Patchwork Place), is that I get a free copy of every new book.  Believe it or not, my poor bookshelf actually collapsed from all the weight!  So part of my task was to extract the poor smashed books from this broken shelf and regroup.

So I finally dedicated some time to it this weekend.  I'm happy to say I've weeded out some books, all donated or given to local friends, I've sorted them all by category and they're all ready to load onto the new bookshelves that will be in place tonight after work.

I've located my sewing machine (I knew it was under there somewhere!) AND my cutting table.  woohoo!!!!  AND, there is floor space!  AND a bit of wall space for my design wall (it never made it up since the move last June).

I'm so excited I can hardly stand it.  I'll post pictures after it's all done.  I'm now sorting through drawers.  How many rotary cutters and seam rippers can one girl have?  I got rid of 3-4 of each, and still have more than I need!  I've organized all the thread, rulers and cutting supplies and ended up with 3 completely empty drawers!  Have about 8 more drawers to go.  But THEN I have to find a home for all the sewing/knitting related stuff I dumped in the guest room.  But now I'm confident I'll have logical space to put it all away....couldn't have made that claim last week.

Bottom line, if I want to sew, now I can.  Also couldn't make that claim last week.  And maybe sometime soon, I can have a guest overnight!

I have to admit that I love organizing, BUT I also have the secret guest room stash area! Slowly but surely I'm getting everything cleaned out and it feels good. Keep at it!

Yes Aida, but then she's also need to hang around to tell us where everything is :)

Don't we all wish we have a Fairy godmother - just one wave of the wand and the sewing room will be cleaned and organized.

Good to hear from you! It sounds like you are in power clean and organize mode. Soon you'll be cutting and sewing and enjoying your space.

Isn't it amazing how much stuff we really have when we organize it?  When we got a big tool cabinet for DH he discovered how many multiples he had of things too. LOL  Glad you found the floor, and your table, and your sewing machine...

As for the guest room -- you have a sofa, don't you? LOL

I can say I truly understand how it can happen.......... my family is very quick to say how do you know where anything is.................. answer is, sometimes I don't!!?

I would so love to have the help of a quilter friend come and spend the day.. week.. month.. with me to come up with just how "better" I can use my room, but I have no one around close enough that would be willing... LOL can you blame them??

Happy to hear that you are seeing floor and walls and shelves and all is well in your wonderful and very useable quilting room!! Enjoy!

Great hearing from you, Karen!  When I'd go on a cleaning spree, my dad would say, "It's good to dig out once in awhile."  The mental image of that comment always made me chuckle.  Some days it feels like a shovel might be put to good use!  Glad you are getting your room organized.
