Quilt With Us

I was just commenting to Mustangquilt's page. She had commented that 40 people are being laid off from a mine in her area today and how that saddens her. While commenting, an idea sprung into mind (that is an amazing feat on its own!!!).....wouldn't it be a good idea if we started making a quilt block on how this economy is affecting us all and an idea of how we think we can help to recover!!!! I think this would be a comforting block for some, and ideas could come forward like crazy and maybe we could even send the completed quilts to the White HOuse!!! Wow, now I am really getting away with myself....what does everyone think!!!!!?????

I like that title 'America-Still Strong and True'. Us quilters can help to see it, for sure! (though we know she isn't the America of yesteryear, anymore). I kinda thought you wanted blocks donated for one big quilt, which would be fun and interesting...it could be a queen size (meaning about 95 x 108- or so). It takes at least 42 twelve inch blocks for one nice queen-size quilt.
But if we do lap quilts, then we'd make a finished project?

Thank you for your interest!!! I think I would like to title it simply "America - still strong & true"?? What do you think?? I have thought about individual lap quilts that we can give to groups of people in our areas that have been affected like losing employment, etc. I would also like to send some to the White House. My Mum always told me to dream big!! 12 1/2 inch quilts or should we go smaller for lap quilts? Would love to have all your inputs!! Thanks again!!!

Hello Sharon~
I like your idea. I had an idea similar (I invited quilt friends near and far to send 12" blocks for a quilt for a quilt friend who'd had leg problems and surgery). She was in the quilt group, and I asked quilters, if they wanted to contribute a block, to make anything they wanted as long as it was 12". I forgot aout the seam allowance, so most of the blocks were just that size. So, I had to compensate, and add sashings -not fun. Then, as each block was different, quilting it was like quilting little 12" quilts, all combined. So, that will lgive you something to think about.
What do you have in mind for this quilt? The title of the quilt may help to give some thoughts about what kind of blocks to make....'Economy Quilt'? not inferring to cheap fabric, of course.
I think it would be fun, so count me in! Will you quilt it?
