Quilt With Us

I’ve spent the last four months hand quilting this quilt top, made by my great-great grandmother, Anne Powell Coonley (1820-1916). This is third of Grandma Coonley’s quilt tops I’ve completed, with three more to go. I would estimate it was sewn between 1880-1900 and it’s pretty fragile. Grandma Coonley was quite the proper lady and not one you messed with. Her granddaughter, my maternal grandmother, was scared to death of her! But because she was so revered (or feared), many of her belongings are still in the family. There’s a picture of a similar quilt in Ruth Finley’s 1929 book and she called the pattern Chained Five-Patch.

Wonderful quilts! I did the hand quilting on a quilt pieced by my grandmother. It was not done as well as yours, but loved just the same.

Thanks, Barb, Jan, and Cat Lady! I feel blessed to have them to finish.

Jan, my grandmother was very healthy until she suddenly passed away a few weeks shy of 95. We always said it was because no one could outlive Grandma Coonley, who still holds the family record of 96.

Wow!  Such a treasure.  She would be proud of you!

handstitcher - The quilt is a treasure.  I'm so glad you are finishing them.  I'm still chuckling at your grandmother's Bible memorization story.  What a hoot!

Thanks, ladies! I love vintage quilts and if they’re family ones on any era, so much the better! Pam, my grandmother had a healthy respect for Grandma Coonley her whole life. As a child, she promised her grandma she would learn to name all the books of the Bible in order. When my grandmother turned 90, she decided she might be seeing Grandma Coonley soon, so she memorized them all, Old and New Testament!

You would be fortunate to have one of hers but to have so many!!! What a treasure...I think having a little fear instilled in kids is okay...but, not be afraid as an adult!
